A Promised Land

Kurzmeinung: I liked his view on world politics and how he questions the choices he made.
A PROMISED LAND

A PROMISED LAND – is with 750 pages just volume one of Obama’s presidential memoirs. It ends with a bang and Osama bin Laden’s death. Surprisingly, I wasn’t that invested in the behind-the-scenes parts of his memoirs but really liked his view on world politics and how he questions the choices he made.

THE OTHER SIDE OF THE BRIDGE

„We will look back and we will realize that our childhoods were beautiful, and everything in them was beautiful, right down to the holes in these cushions.“ (P 204)

THE OTHER SIDE OF THE BRIDGE - is set in the 1920s and 1950s in a little town in Northern Ontario. Lawson tells the story of two brothers that is full of guilt, jealousy, and commitment. Her narrative voice is so beautiful and compelling I wanted the story to go on forever. Definately among the best books of the year 2022.

Crossing to Safety

Kurzmeinung: I never heard of anybody’s life but ours being changed by a dinner party. (P. 38)
Crossing to Safety

“I have heard of people’s lives being changed by a dramatic or traumatic event – a death, a divorce, a winning lottery ticket, a failed exam. I never heard of anybody’s life but ours being changed by a dinner party.” (P. 38)

CROSSING TO SAFETY - is a story of two academic couples meeting in the late 1930s - both men work in the English department at the University of Wisconsin. When faced with tragedy, their humanity, appreciation and love for each other deepens. Stegner has a beautiful, quiet narrative voice with which he captures the essence of marriage and friendship. Amazing final read of the year.

Das Kalkwerk

Kurzmeinung: The outward quiet he had always believed would give him the inward quiet, but he soon found out what a fundamental mistake that was! (P.80)
THE LIME WORKS - ENGLISH VERSION

„Here he was at last, actually at the lime works he had taken such infinite pains to get into because it was such a quiet place, the outward quiet which was of its essence and which he had always believed would give him the inward quiet he needed for his work, but he soon found out what a fundamental mistake that was!” (P.80)

THE LIME WORKS – looks at failure, isolation, genius, desperation, and the egocentricity of Konrad who killed his wife on his way to complete his study that is his lifework and ultimately destroys himself too.

Cover des Buches Why We Matter (ISBN: 9783351038472)

Bewertung zu "Why We Matter" von Emilia Roig

Why We Matter
WHY WE MATTER

The question is: Are you ready to see the world from a perspective that isn’t yours?

Roig's text is meaningful encouragement. She unveils the fatal power structures in capitalism, white supremacy and patriarchy that need to be broken up. Enlightening!

What Are You Going Through: A Novel

WHAT ARE YOU GOING THROUGH

„I don’t know about you, but I’ve completely lost faith in people to do the right thing.” (P. 146)

WHAT ARE YOU GOING THROUGH – is about life and death. The narrator agrees to support her old friend diagnosed with terminal cancer who has decided to end her life on her own terms. There is no hope in this crisis yet there is nostalgia, grace, friendship, compassion, humanity, and at times even humor. I loved the interiority, the many sidetracks, and the cat.
