Harry Potter 1-7
- Jane Austen
The Jane Austen BBC Radio Drama Collection: Six BBC Radio full-cast dramatisations
- Chris Priestley

Shivers: The Horror Diaries, Book 5
(1)Aktuelle Rezension von: misspiderNight Of The Vampire
I liked the humor in this one, which makes it refreshingly different. ***
Long Live The Bonsai
Wow, what an incredible story: funny, sad and a little creepy. I loved it! *****
The Wildest West
Honestly, I did not care much for this story, it just wasn't my cup of tea. *
Curses Never Die
This had a very strong sense of a teenager adventure story, which for whatever reason reminded me of a more mature version of the Magical Tree House books... **
I enjoyed listening to this collection, especially the Bonsai story which really stands out. - Krystal Lawrence
Cat O' Nine Tales
(1)Aktuelle Rezension von: misspiderThis collection presents stories somewhere between crime and the supernatural. I enjoyed every one of them, especially those featuring weird animals, but my favorite story was about an author who intends to let the main character of his famous western series die - however, the main character has other plans...
More subtle than striking and with a little pinch of humor, 'Cat O' Nine Tales' counts as one of the better collections out there. The author has a great way with words, making each story special, and while I favored some stories over others, and found that two stories had a very similar plot, there was not one bad apple in the bunch. Highly recommended. - Clark Kidder

Filmscripts - Dreimal E-Book-Kino (Kurzgeschichte, Krimi, Thriller) (Die 'booksnacks' Kurzgeschichten Reihe)
- Dani Hoots
A World of Vampires: Volume 1
(1)Aktuelle Rezension von: misspiderThis collection contains four stories, each devoted to a special kind of vampire: Hooh-Strah-Dooh, Baobhan Sith, Strigoi and Jiangshi. The concept sounded promising and diversified, especially when depicting the differences and origins of each type of vampire. However, that was exactly what I was missing here. The stories were exchangeable and mostly uninspired - nothing I had not read somewhere else before.
The first story was a boring and uninventive mixture of vampire romance - 1 star. The second story was just plain boring - 1 star. The third story took place in Romania with an evil vampire living in a castle (of course) and an ancient spell adding just enough mystery to pique my curiosity for the first time since I opened the book - 2 stars. The one story that made this collection almost worthwhile was the last one titled 'Jiangshi', which not only explained the history of this special kind of vampire in sufficient detail, but also delivered a very original and unusual tale about guild, remorse and revenge - 3 stars.
Conclusion: if you are looking for something different in the vampire genre, go searching elsewhere or read only the last story. If you are not too picky and in desperate need of your next vampire fix, this may keep you going for a little while longer. - Joe R. Lansdale
Dead on the Bones: Pulp on Fire
(1)Aktuelle Rezension von: misspiderThis was a very interesting collection and nice introduction to the origins of the pulp genre, which I was too young (or not yet there at all ;) to experience firsthand. I only vaguely remember watching Tarzan as a TV series and the b/w movies, but that's about all I can say for it. So let's take a closer look at the stories we get here:
Pulp Fury: An Introduction
The introduction was very insightful and though I am not familiar with the authors mentioned my interest was piqued and I will investigate them further. I wonder if the pulp magazines and TV shows were as popular here in Germany, my guess would be that they were mainly an American thing. My parents sure can't remember stumbling upon them ;)
The Gruesome Affair of the Electric Blue Lightning
The first story, starring detective Auguste Dupin (whose character actually was invented by Poe) was ok but it held my interest only loosely. Too many coincidences and convenient guess work for my liking, though it perfectly depicts the detective's quirky 'Sherlock Holmes'-like nature (while actually, it would have been Dupin who inspired the creation of Holmes...). **
The Redheaded Dead
Though I love stories with fangs, this one about a vampire-hunting god-doubting preacher was the worst of the collection - simply utterly boring. *
King of the Cheap Romance
"Third time is a charm" and the third story of the collection, which is a sci-fi bit about a girl stranded on Mars (though most part of it read like it could have played somewhere in the arctic region as well) was the first to really hold my interest throughout. Could this be the turning point in the book?! ***
Naked Angel
Wow! I was truly mesmerized by this perfect little piece of 'pulp noir'. Got me with this one! *****
Dead on the Bones
Another tasty treat comes with this story about revenge and voodoo. Great! ****
Tarzan and the Land That Time Forgot
Reading this one stirred some vague memories of a black and white Tarzan and some distant dinosaur movie scenes (were there any in the original King Kong movie? I just can't put my finger on it where these come from). Entertaining, but nothing new on this front, and I didn't care for the macho aura surrounding Tarzan like a cloud of flies around something smelly. ***
Under the Warrior Star
What I loved about this story was the background story about a man being sent into an artificially created universe where he encounters strange people on a strange planet...the rest was just another Tarzan-like super hero saves the beauty hodge-podge with lots of fighting against some savages or beasts. **
The Wizard of the Trees
Didn't I just read that story? Way too similar to the Warrior Star, this story was perfect to resurface from the pulp realm, fading into the background while the here and now took over again. **
As a whole, this collection provides a common but decent 3 star mixture of good, great and ugly. However, the author definitely delivered on his promise that the collection would be pure pulp, and I am glad I took the opportunity to get more familiar with his work.

The Christmas Planet and Other Stories (English Edition)
(1)Aktuelle Rezension von: misspiderA collection of four short stories, all with a sci-fi twist. The first story which gives the book its title is definitely the best: a family spending Christmas on a specially themed planet. But something is weird, and not just the dog-faced aliens that live here, so Jake Corby does some little investigating.
Then there was a romantic space pirate story, an action-packed story about the rescue of an abducted girl, and a piece about mind control.
All stories shared a good portion of humor and originality which made them very entertaining and unpredictable. A surprisingly refreshing diversion from my usual hunting grounds.
