The Secret Garden
- Philippa Warden
Emma's Sunflower
(1)Aktuelle Rezension von: Miffy_NijntjeThrough the seasons of the year with Emma’s observations
The story of Emma, her birds and sunflowers in the garden is beautifully illustrated. There is a lot of movement in the illustrations. Children can get a first idea of how nature works throughout the year.
I love the four fun activities at the end of the book. Four ideas on how to work with this book in a creative way and how to bring the children into action.
Emma watches the change of nature in the garden. She adores the finches, especially when she has the opportunity to observe them. Birds fly, flowers grow, but then, for some reasons, the flowers and birds leave. And come back again. Joy, loss, hope, surprise. Emma sees all the seasons of the year and gets a big surprise for her birthday - from mother nature. - Ian McEwan
The Cement Garden
- Frances Hodgson Burnett
The Secret Garden
(2)Aktuelle Rezension von: NelebooksContent (LB): "After losing her parents, young Mary Lennox is sent from India to live her her uncle's gloomy mansion on the wild English moors. She is lonely and has no one to play with, but one day she learns of a secret garden somewhere in to grounds that no one is allowed to enter. Then Mary uncovers an old key in a flowerbed - and a gust of magic leads her to the hidden door. Slowly she turns the key and enters a world she could never have imagined."
Cover: The Cover is made for children. I think there are better covers of books for this story but with the children and the garden it is fitting to the story.
Opinion: At the beginning I couldn't really like Mary but during the story I liked her more and more because she changed from her character and I always like it if characters evolves. I really like to accompany Mary in this story. I like the idea of the story, children can learn something from it and I can really commend it.

Night Gardening
(1)Aktuelle Rezension von: anenaA wonderful edition - romantic dust-jacket, beautiful drawings of flowers for each chapter - but the contents did not meet my high expectations. It was recommended by friends as one of the best books ever read. In my opinion the descriptions of the two gardens are worth reading. But the plot - a garden-architect falls in love with a sixty-one-year old widow recovering from a stroke - was too romantic - almost kitchy - for my taste. - Joanna Chambers

Mrs. Meyer's Magical Garden
(3)Aktuelle Rezension von: TalathielEli’s parents have broken up and life as she has known ends since that day. But one day, she finds a way to a forbidden garden. There she meets a very strange old lady, Mrs. Meyer. But according to her Eli’s class mate Emma Mrs. Meyer should have died a long time ago. But though Mrs. Meyer shows Eli a world of enchanting things, a world of magic, where Eli can be a child again and can forget her sorrows…
Nikola Hahn’s “Mrs. Meyer’s Magical Garden” is a wonderful and easy to read novel. With the help of Eli, you can immerse into the story, which is a fairy tale told for adults. By the author’s use of a very figurative language, the journey to the forbidden garden will become a most beautiful and gorgeous event.
Nikola Hahn contrives it to let the story happen on a fine line between reality and fantasy. Sometimes it is even hard to tell apart, if it is fantasy or not when Eli visits the forbidden garden. On the other hand, there are scenes whom are well-defined. You will lose yourself easily in that lovely story and surely will begin to dream of Mrs. Magical Garden.
I much enjoyed even the many descriptions of the many flowers and trees that grew in her garden. You can learn a lot of their appearance, the place to plant them and other interesting things about them. You may want make your own bed of flowers.
A very interesting part is that Eli not only gets friends in her fantasy world, but even learns how to make friend in the real world. The forbidden garden makes her little broken world a bit better and life worth living again. More than that, she really enjoys fleeing in her forbidden garden and experience so many adventures in it.
More than that, the novel contains a lot of lovely pictures around the garden, which makes “Mrs. Meyer’s Magical Garden” even more adorable.
With Nikola Hahn’s “Mrs. Meyer’s Magical Garden” you definitely get on a journey to a magical world, a fairy tale, told for adults through the eyes of a child. I truly can recommend this novel for all who loves to get back to their childhood memories. - 8
