Bücher mit dem Tag "moving"

Vielleicht ist euch der süße Studio Ghibli Film ja bekannt! Ich wusste gar nicht, dass es auf einem Buch basiert und war extremst neugierig, ob es genau so gut ist. Und ja... es war ganz okay. 

Die Geschichte ist schon recht niedlich, aber die visuellen Effekte im Film machen doch viel her. 

Per sé habe ich nichts an dem Buch auszusetzen, aber ich bevorzuge tatsächlich den Film. Eventuell liegt es am Alter - Howl's Moving Castle ist ein Kinder- und Jugendbuch und ich bin da doch etwas älter. 

What happens when your father starts doubting the church and it is the middle of the Victorian era in Britain? That is what Margaret goes through in „North and south“ by Elisabeth Gaskell.

Margaret and her parents move to the industrial south after her father quits the church. There, she is confronted with child labour, illness and poverty, but furthermore with prejudices and ignorance. When her family falls apart, she needs to find her own place in society.

„North and South“ contains many things I admire about Victorian classics. The detailed descriptions of social standings, poverty and severe illnesses were common among contemporary authors such as Austen, Brontë and Dickens. Gaskell goes further by outlining the social economics of the time. She does a great job by sharing Margaret’s thoughts about the mill owners and the slavery going on. 

Margaret is the person I admire the most. She lost both her parents and has to see her brother getting taken away, yet she is set to change her mind about industry and the mills. As I read the story through Margaret’s eyes, I can only guess that Thornton changed in several points as well. They seem to fit each other and proof to be a good combination when it comes to opinions.

All the good things about the book do, however, have a counterpart. I know times were hard and Gaskell described it quite realistic, but I wish she would have showed possible solutions- like in Jane Eyre and Agned Grey. There is little mention of what Margarete will actually change and I miss the revolutionary part of it. 

While I enjoyed reading the novel and found great pleasure in it, I think that someone with no prior knowledge to Victorian literature in Britain would have difficulty understanding it. Gaskell criticises social standards, the working conditions and the general health Britain had to go through in the 19th century. Hence, I would advise such readers to read a guide to Victorian England (any would do) in advance. 

„When I look back on my childhood I wonder how I survived at all. It was, of course, a miserable childhood: the happy childhood is hardly worth your while. Worse than the ordinary miserable childhood is the miserable Irish childhood, and worse yet is the miserable Irish Catholic childhood.“

Reading this quote you would think that you're about to read a depressing and boring memoir of a boy growing up in Limerick in the 1930's and 40's.
But Angela's Ashes by Frank McCourt is much more, it's funny, thought-provoking, ironic and yes, depressing and heart-breaking as well, when three of his siblings die in infancy for instance.

Born in America to a Northern Irish father, who loves drinking more than his family, and an Irish mother, his parents went back to Ireland when he was five. Frank's whole childhood is dominated by poverty, hunger, broken shoes and his father who spends his wages or the dole money in pubs and comes home singing Irish rebel songs.

„Angela's Ashes“ is told in a succession of little anecdotes about McCourts life, told like a stream of conciousness in the voice of the age of the narrator. This style is unique in my opinion, McCourt describes his experiences at the age of five like a five-year-old would. The reader essentially grows up with him.

Through Frank's eyes, we witness how life was among the poorest, the way the Catholic church and her teachings permeate every aspect of life, until thoughts of sin and doom are ingrained in everyone and thus the bad conscience he had as a teenage boy for „dirty thoughts“. The priests feign mercy towards the poor but despise them at the same time. Frank is denied entrance at secondary schools, which are run by the Catholic church, because he is poor and even though his headmaster puts in a good word for him. Still, Frank is optimistic and dreams of emigrating to America. In spite of the despair eminent in the book, our narrator is full of optimism and that makes „Angela's Ashes“ so memorable.
I really liked Frank McCourt's memoir, which also won the Pulitzer Prize in the 90's and recommend it to anyone interested in Ireland in the 30's and 40's.

ACHTUNG! 5.Teil Der KGI-Reihe Nachdem mir ja der vierte Teil nicht so gut gefallen hat, bin ich hier wieder voll begeistert.Trotz Übersinnlichem ist das Buch gelungen. Die Hauptcharaktere haben mir sehr gut gefallen und Rio kannte ich ja schon von den vorherigen Bänden und fand ich sehr sympathisch.Zum Glück wurde Grace's Schwester nur hie und da erwähnt denn die ging mir schon in "ihrer" Geschichte auf die Nerven.Sonst kann ich nur sagen das der Schreibstil weiterhin im bekannten Banks-Stil ist ( die einen lieben ihn die anderen hassen ihn...).Wer englisch kann sollte die Bücher unbedingt im Original lesen denn es ist ein wahrer Genuss und kommt noch besser rüber als auf deutsch ( Ich habe die Bücher auf deutsch gelesen und die Übersetzung war sehr gut ).Ich gebe eine unbedingte Leseempfehlung für ein spannendes Buch mit viel Gefühl und tollen Charakteren! was soll ich sagen? die geschichte ist nicht neu erfunden.dann kommt noch dazu dass sich das ganze fast nur auf dem schiff abgespielt hat.da kam leider schnell langeweile auf und ich musste mehrmals anlauf nehmen um das buch zu beenden.zwar konnten die protagonisten teilweise schon unterhalten, aber für meinen geschmack war es zuwenig.es gibt wirklich nicht viel zu sagen.daher nur noch der klappentext: feisty lady raine cameron has been surrounded her whole life by gossip claiming she is not her father's daughter.detremined to find hervtrue heritage , the dark- haired beauty boards the black raven under false pretenses in search of the man who she believes is her father, a man who is also a traitor to scotland.only the black raven himself stands in her way... laird keir macneil has a reputation for being a ruthless and powerful ship captain.on a mission to apprehend scotland's most wanted traitor, he never expected to see raine on his ship.keir vows to keep raine out of harm's way and return her to her family untarnished.but as his lust for her grows ,he must choose between honor and the woman he never expected to desire...

zuerst einmal möchte ich der autorin ein grosses kompliment machen für das einbringen des sympathischen,schottischen akzents in den roman!da merkt man nämlich beim lesen noch viel deutlicher den unterschied zwischen engländern und schotten.die geschichte selber ist sehr vorhersehbar und eher im dornenvögel oder fackeln im sturm- stil.einfach das sich das ganze ab dem jahr 1483 ereignet.vom titel her ( spitfire ) hatte ich mir mehr pepp und spannung erhofft.ich bin immer wieder geschockt wie wenig frauen ,auch adlige, früher wert waren.hauptsache sie sahen einigermassen gut aus und sobald sie gebärfähig waren, ging es ans kindermachen.trotzdem war ich von arabellas mutter enttäuscht, dass sie einerseits ihre tochter im glauben liess dass sich ihr verlobter für sie interessiert,obwohl sie genau wusste dass dem nicht so war.andererseits war jasper ( arabellas verlobter) ein perverser , wiederlicher lustmolch und sie unternahm nichts um die hochzeit zu verhindern.im gegenteil , sie redete ihrer tochter noch ein , sie sei nicht gut genug für so einen tollen mann . zwischendurch gibt es immer wieder lustigen schlagabtausch zwischen den hauptprotagonisten.zwei negativpunkte die zwar nur ein detail sind möchte ich noch erwähen. erstens glaube ich nicht dass man im jahr 1483 die brust als "titties"bezeichnet hat.das fand ich halt etwas doof. zweitens habe ich nicht das gefühl, dass zu dieser zeit ein mann die genauen anzeichen einer schwangeren frau kannte ( tavis der hauptprotagonist konnte sie aber arabella ( der hauptprotagonstin ) alle einzeln aufzählen. wie gesagt ,sind es nur details,die mich aber gestört haben. manchmal hatte ich das gefühl , die geschichte könnte jetzt eigentlich bald fertigsein.und dann ging es trotzdem immer weiter und weiter.sehr langatmig das ganze. ich würde sagen das buch ist so mittelmässig. klappentext: the year is 1483. tavis steward , earl of dunmore, abducts beautyfull lady arabella grey, cousin of king richard III, as she is about to marry sir jasper keane.tvis wants revenge for jasper's murder of his fiancée.irresistibly,deliciously ,arabella surrenders to her enemy with fierce abandon - knowing that there may be onlyone way to get what is rightfully hers.

ACHTUNG ❗️ 5. Teil der SLOW - BURN Reihe Dieser Teil war eigentlich wieder sehr gut.Einen Stern abgezogen habe ich, weil es häufig wirklich extrem kitschig/übetrieben war.In der Geschichte wurde das Thema Sekte eingebunden.Das fand ich abwechslungsreich (verglichen mit den vorherigen Teilen) .Sonst hat mir das meiste eigentlich gefallen, und man "hört" wieder etwas von Tori, die im ersten Teil der Reihe verschleppt und misshandelt wurde.Man merkt , und ich habe gehofft,dass es im nächsten Teil um sie und Dane geht.Wer Maya Bank's Bücher mag und kennt,wird auch hier wieder voll auf seine Kosten kommen.Zum Schluss wird es so richtig spannend und man freut sich auf den nächsten Teil.Eine klare Leseempfehlung also von mir, mit ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Sternen bewertet.Für inhaltliche Informationen bitte weiterlesen.KLAPPENTEXT : 📖 Raised in a strict religious cult since she was a young girl,Jenna has no connection to the outside world beyond vague flashes of memory that seem to be from another life.Memories she clings to when the cult leaders discover her extraordinary ability to heal - and punish her.Years held captive and forced to do the cult's bidding have turned Jenna into a meck, timid woman ... or so they think.in truth , she is merely biding her time , waiting for the perfect moment to escape.
