One of those books that pained me and yet I couldn't stop reading it!!!
Amir and Hassan (son of the former father's servant) grew up together in an Afghanistan, most of us don't know and which isn't comparable with the Afghanistan we see in everyday news. While Amir frequently tries to gain his father's love and acceptance, Hassan becomes a more than loyal friend to him, sacrificing almost his entire life.
When reading the first half of the book, I started to really loathe cowardly, egocentric, self-pittying Amir, who is blind to Hassan's pure and loyal nature and betrays him when he needs him most and even manages to get him and his father thrown out of the house. Even when he and his father have to flee crisis-ridden Afghanistan and end up in California, he still seems wimpy to me.
Long after his father's death and some years into a childless marriage, Hassan returns to Afghanistan to set things right. He not only learns about Hassan's death but also a dark secret of his father, whom he always idolized and put on a pedestal. It's his father's legacy that takes him to Kabul on a quest to finally do the right thing and save at least Hassan's child from an old nemesis.
The story enfolds beautifully and gives magnificent and interesting insights into an Afghanistan I've never heard of before, while telling about father-son relationships, true friendships and reprieve, a definite MUST-Read!!
