Kurzmeinung: Was für ein Ende!!!

The finale to Adelina´s story is too short. It´s over way too soon, hardly after it began. I just contained my joyous feelings over the fact that - finally - I held it in my hands, when it was over. Done. Finito.
All in all 100 pages more wouldn´t have hurt the story. If anything it would´ve closed some chapters.
But really it´s only what we Austrians call „complaining on high levels“; meaning I could criticize some things if someone asked me to.
What I really want to do is compose a high standard, lyrical praise song. Only that I can´t.
TMS starts with making you really uncomfortable. it´s been a year since the 2nd installment. Has Adeline always been this cruel?? Mariano certainly did wonders for her self esteem and her go-by standards, but has she always been this CRUEL??? In the beginning I practically inhaled the pages, close to disgusted by her behavior and hopeful at the same time. Hopefully she would see her error soon. Hopefully she wouldn´t and stay the evil queen we never, ever get in any of the other novels. Brilliantly done, really.
That´s the real beauty of this series. What´s good and bad? What´s black and white? What´s grey, even?
The journey they took together forced them to hold my breath in anticipation all the time and let me blink in hope for a better future. And yet all the unspoken accusations, lies and truths fit them perfectly.
Up until then it was a really good story, a nice final to Adelina´s journey. It was certainly missing some plot conclusions, but I was quite content.
But then the ending came, the way a steamroller rolls over a box of glass marbles. Goal? Destroy. Take a reader´s heart, rip it out and rejoice in your victory. You did it.
In the end, Adelina chose to be the better version of herself (although I wouldn´t have had any problems with her giving in to her dark side). In the end she chose to save herself in the only way possible. In the end, a beautiful tale rose from the broken pieces of a lifetime of suffering.
The Midnight Star is a final masterpiece in a brilliant story where light finally triumphs over darkness.
Now, a box of tissues and a bar of chocolates, please.
Someone catch me while I break down. a
